14.12.2020: Online petition of Global Belarusian Community
to ban the import of nuclear energy from Belarus to EU and force the operation of the NPP in Astrawetz, Belarus to be stopped until guarantees of its safety are obtained.
Dezember 2020: The Press-release sent to the government of Austria, political parties, mass media, various NGOs and civil organizations in December 2020:
“Belarusian diaspora and EU citizens urge to abandon purchases of electricity from the Astrawets nuclear power plant in Belarus (BelNPP). The Global Belarusian Community and residents of the European Union have started signing a petition to the European Parliament, the European Commission, leading political parties of the EU, public organizations and EU environmental initiatives with a call to support the initiative of the Republic of Lithuania to place a total ban on the import of electricity produced in Belarus, including the import from the territory of third countries, on the transit of electricity produced in Belarus, and to implement sanctions against companies supplying equipment to the BelNPP.
The authors note in the petition that, in particular, they “fear for their safety and the safety of future generations” and do not want a repeat of the Chernobyl tragedy. The activists note that the decision to build the nuclear power plant was made without taking into account the opinions of both residents of Belarus and neighboring countries. Information about the technical condition of the nuclear power plant, its conformity to safety standards, the results of inspections and examinations were not made publicly available. Thus, citizens are deprived of the right to receive reliable information. Financing of the construction was carried out non-transparently and with corruption risks."
